How to Wear Dark Lipstick

By  |

I have always been really scared of dark lipsticks. I’m already black-why will I want blacker lips. I am certain most of you will be in this same predicament. Not to worry, I always experiment for Podozians.

I advise you do some shopping, and test different textures of dark lipsticks. The best thing to do is, always try it: get a bit on the lips to see if it brightens or just make you look more tired.  Your preference might be creamy instead of matte? Dark lipsticks come in a variety of colours and textures. You can wear whatever texture and finish you like, and there are a variety of options.

Some of you may be wondering, what shades even qualify a dark lipstick? These colours tend to be in the rich berry, crimson, inky plum, deep burgundy, and straight-up black lipsticks.

  1. Scrub

The first step to bold lips is exfoliating. The best way to exfoliate is to use a lip scrub 1-2 times a week. Apply the scrub to the lips and gently massage it in, getting rid of all the excess skin. Apply a lip balm after and let it sit for a while before applying lipstick. This practice is best done before bed, to ensure nice and soft hydrated lips in the morning.

  1. Moisturize

For whatever reason, dark lipsticks (especially in matte formulas) are just inherently more drying than lighter lippies. Use a lip balm before the application.

  1. Line Lips

Start by tracing the border of your lips with a lip liner. To keep everything simple, use either a universal, invisible lip liner or one that matches the colour of your lipstick. If you feel like going extreme, use a liner that is a few shades lighter or darker than your lipstick of choice can give you a transformed colour or even an ombré effect when the colours mix. By establishing the boundaries of your lipstick it will help hold the colour in place.

  1. Apply

Help yourself with a lip brush to control the application and intensity: start from outer corners of your mouth and work towards the centre. When applying your lipstick, make sure to hold your lips taut while you do so. This will ensure that colour is deposited on every part of your lip.

  1. Blot

All you have to do is take a piece of tissue or toilet paper and gently press it against your lips without smearing or rubbing. Once you’ve done this, dab on one more layer of lipstick so that your colour will last as long as possible.

Clean lip lines are imperative when wearing dark lipstick. Make sure you pair the right lip liner with your chosen hue, and define your lip shape ever so slightly leaving little to no room for error or messy smudging. Finish the look off with minimal eyeshadow and a soft cream blush, and lots of thickening mascara!

Let your make-up be light-keep your look simple; get the perfect skin coverage with concealer and foundation, refine the eyebrows, swipe some mascara and add a bit of lipstick in the centre of the lip, for a more glamorous effect, which can even work during the day. If purple black shades are too much for you then opt for the red-purple, blackened-red or blue-red look for more vibrant on lips.
