5 Ways we Wreck our Skin

By  |

Our skin is our body’s outer covering. It is our largest organ. The skin is very import as covers and protects everything in our body- protects against heat and light, injury, and infection. It also regulates body temperature and stores water, fat, and vitamin D.

There are habits that we have imbibed over the years that may be harming our skin and changing the way it looks. Now, until we stop some of these habits, the beauty products we buy may not be able to function to their fullness capacity. Below are some ways by which we are wrecking our skin.

CLOSE THOSE EYES

Don’t skip sleep. Our skin rejuvenates while we sleep, and our skin gets a break from the stress of environment including sunlight, pollution, and the temperatures. When we don’t get enough shut-eye we can get bags under our eyes and dull and listless looking skin.

RESIST THE TEMPTATION-TO EAT

Avoid overeating-especially this season, some of us can’t take our eyes away from food-even if we just had a meal 5 minutes ago. Weight gain does more than just increase your girth. It stretches your skin. If you gain a lot of weight your skin will stretch, often resulting in stretch marks. Then when you lose the weight if your skin isn’t elastic enough to bounce back you could be left with flabby, saggy skin that can only be fixed with plastic surgery.

TIP: Eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight for healthy looking skin.

KNOW YOUR SKIN

Some of us don’t know the kind of skin we have, we don’t kmow what we should use and what we shouldn’t use, which is bad in my opinion, I think everyone should examine their skin once a month, it just helps you notice a new growth or scar. If you find anything that concerns you, or you have a personal or family history of skin disease, see a dermatologist.

DON’T POP PIMPLES

I pop my pimples, it’s a really nasty habit that I should stop because it just causes black heads around my face-plus it’s painful to pop. Instead of popping the pimple, cleanse your skin with an appropriate cleanser, and use over-the-counter remedies that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and try to let your skin heal on its own. If the products you are using are not working, consult a dermatologist.

Picking, popping, and squeezing can make your acne worse, and even lead to scarring.

SMOKING

Smokers are liable to die young or have cancer. I saw a video of a guy who had cancer because he started smoking at a young age, he literally had no throat. He had to talk with a device because there was a gaping hole in his throat. Smoking leads to lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease, and stroke. But did you know smoking also damages the skin and prematurely ages it?

Tip: If you don’t smoke, don’t start, and if you do smoke, quit.

CLEANSER

Don’t use the wrong cleanser for your face. Your facial skin needs a milder cleanser. Choose a gentle, non-abrasive cleaner without alcohol for your face, and avoid scrubbing, which can irritate delicate facial skin. Rinse and gently pat dry. If you have oily skin and are prone to acne, use an oil-free and noncomedogenic (Noncomedogenic is a term applied to oils, lotions, and skin creams that do not block pores) cleaner. If you have dry or itchy skin apply moisturizer after washing. Limit washing your face to twice daily and after sweating heavily to avoid additional irritation.
